Prevention and Fight against Violent Extremism and Radicalization Leading to Terrorism in Prisons and Probation Service (Phase 1)

“Prevention and Fight against Violent Extremism and Radicalization Leading to Terrorism in Prisons and Probation Service (Phase 1) ” implemented by the OSCE Presence in Tirana, financially supported by the Government of Austria, the Government of Sweden, the Government of the Federal Republic German and the Government of the Italian Republic. The project was implemented in close partnership with the Coordination Centre for Countering Violent Extremism, the General Directorate of Prisons and the General Directorate of Probation Service.

Through this project it became possible:

  • Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the project between the OSCE Presence, the Ministry of Justice and the National Coordinator for Countering Violent Extremism;
  • A needs assessment of the prison situation and probation service was conducted;
  • Development of a basic training module on the VERLT phenomenon and capacity building for prison and Probation Service staff;
  • Regional cooperation was strengthened, and
  • Awareness raising among VERLT stakeholders and related human rights-based interventions in the penitentiary system in Albania.
