The CVE Center participated in the events organized by the United Nations (UN), in the framework of “Counter-Terrorism Week” from 24 June to 30 June. The Second Counter-Terrorism Week comprised two high-level events and side events jointly organized by Member States, international and regional organizations, UN entities, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

During the Counter-Terrorism week were discussed challenges related to:

  • Prevention in the age of transformative technologies;
  • Upholding Human Rights and promoting gender responsiveness while countering terrorism;
  • Responding to new & evolving #CT challenges;
  • Multilateralism as next decade #CT priority;
  • The critical role of civil society and local actors in building partnerships for prevention.

The Director of the CVE Center, Mrs. Lejdi Dervishi, contributed to the side event entitled: “Life After ISIS: Returning individuals with links to terrorist groups from Syria and Iraq and the UN support available to the Member States through the Global Framework”. The event highlighted some key considerations for the Member States and the international community to meet the challenges related to the protection, prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration of returnees from conflict zones in Syria and Iraq and presented the UN support available to the Member States through the Global Framework.

Mrs. Dervishi presented the progress and reinforcements undertaken by the Albanian Government regarding countering terrorism (CT), preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) in Albania.

The Second United Nations High-Level Conference entitled “Countering and Preventing Terrorism in the Age of Transformative Technologies: Addressing the Challenges of the New Decade” provided a platform for Member States, United Nations entities, international and regional organizations, civil society and the private sector to exchange information, experiences, and good practices, as well as to explore further cooperation on key counter-terrorism priorities under the four pillars of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The Conference provided a significant and timely opportunity to consider the practical implementation of relevant aspects of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy (A/RES/60/288) and its review resolutions, including those on human rights, gender equality and engagement with youth and civil society, in line with Member States’ priorities.

The five thematic sessions of the Conference were focused on key counter-terrorism priorities under the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Since the adoption of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, there have been many examples of cooperation among Member States including through the conclusion of new multilateral, regional and bilateral cooperation agreements. However, much more can and needs to be done to strengthen regional and international counterterrorism cooperation, specifically in response to the misuse of new technologies.
