The Coordination Center for Countering Violent Extremism in cooperation with the Prefecture of Tirana established the Regional Committee for the Prevention of Radicalism and Violent Extremism. The meeting brought together a broad group of actors as described in Order no. 185 dated 31.10.2023 of the Prime Minister, demonstrating a unified approach towards addressing the challenges of radicalism and violent extremism. The formation of the Committee underlines the government’s commitment to fostering a collaborative environment, bringing together representatives from various sectors, including law enforcement actors such as local police, probation, border police, social services, employment, health and education.

The meeting was chaired by the Prefect Afrim Qëndro, who will also play the role of the chairman of the Committee, showing the high level of importance given to this initiative. He was assisted by the National Coordinator for CVE Lejdi Dervishi as well as the Director of the Counseling Line for Women and Girls, Iris Luarasi, which shows the all-inclusive and multidisciplinary approach of the meeting.

The meeting established the basic framework for the Committee’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to effectively combat the threat of radicalization and violent extremism at the regional level. The participants engaged in comprehensive discussions on early identification, intervention and promotion of comprehensive community engagement practices as well as the approach that this committee will have on rehabilitation processes for individuals located in Tirana District.

“Our responsibility is to do everything necessary to address these problems which are no longer only faced by our country”, emphasized the Prefect of Tirana, Afrim Qendro.

The National Coordinator for the fight against violent extremism, Lejdi Dervishi, emphasized the importance of cooperation and the sharing of expertise among the members of the commission. While Director Iris Luarasi underlined the role of support and advisory services in preventive efforts, advocating for the awareness of all actors.

The establishment of this Committee is a critical step forward in increasing coordination and cooperation among all relevant stakeholders, ensuring a cohesive response aimed at protecting the community and supporting national security.

The commitment demonstrated by all meeting participants is a promising indicator of the potential impact this committee will have in fostering a safer community. The Committee approved the regulation for the functioning of the Regional Committee for the Prevention of Radicalism and the Fight against Violent Extremism, as well as determined the members of its Technical Secretariat.

The creation of the Regional Committee marks a proactive step towards the protection of the community and the promotion of peace and security in the District of Tirana. With the leadership of the Prefect and the support of the National Coordinator on Violent Extremism, the newly established committee is poised to make important strides in protecting the community and promoting a safe and inclusive society. The committee is expected to develop and implement targeted strategies that address the root causes of radicalization, with a focus on education, community engagement and support for individuals at risk.
